Panic-Stricken Republican Party Looks To Get Trump Back On Track

KELLY MCEVERS, HOST:

It seems a leaders of a Republican Party are scrambling to get their presidential hopeful behind on track. Donald Trump has spent a past several days traffic with some controversy, and that’s been followed by reports of a debate in irregularity and a celebration in panic. Though publicly Trump and his debate insist all is fine.

DONALD TRUMP: So we only wish to tell we a debate is doing unequivocally well. It’s never been so well-united.

MCEVERS: NPR domestic editor Domenico Montanaro’s with us now. Hi there, Domenico. Hi there, Domenico.

DOMENICO MONTANARO, BYLINE: Hey there, Kelly.

MCEVERS: OK, so how bad are things right now for Donald Trump and a Republican Party?

MONTANARO: Well, let’s only step behind and consider about what’s happened over only a final hundred hours (laughter) or so.

MCEVERS: OK.

MONTANARO: You had Donald Trump criticizing a family whose son had died as a infantryman in Iraq after they had criticized him during a Democratic National Convention and afterwards on several radio programs. He pronounced he wasn’t utterly prepared to validate Paul Ryan, who’s orator of a House, and John McCain after they had permitted him and arrange of stranded by him even yet they had criticized his comments about that family.

You had this minute that Donald Trump pronounced a NFL wrote to him about a tumble debates and a timing of those debates being – opposing with a NFL season.

And we even had Donald Trump creation fun of glow marshals and a baby – so flattering protected to contend that Donald Trump has gotten off on a wrong feet after a convention, and it’s been justification by a trip in a polls.

MCEVERS: As we said, there are reports drifting around also about all sorts of disharmony behind a scenes, we know? Inside a campaign, there’s speak of an intervention, speak of Republican leaders looking into options for replacing Trump on a ticket. How genuine is any of that?

MONTANARO: Well, there’s unequivocally been a lot of hand-wringing within a Republican National Committee. This seems to go on once each integrate of weeks. You’ve had Reince Priebus play something of a translator with Trump. Priebus is a authority of a Republican National Convention – meets with Trump on a unchanging basis, talks with him on a unchanging basis, perplexing to kind of enclose him and manager him on how to respond to domestic attacks. This is positively not what a debate or a Republican National Committee would have wanted.

MCEVERS: Trump’s tragedy with House Speaker Paul Ryan reached a new turn this week. Also Trump pronounced yesterday he’s not prepared to validate Ryan in his primary subsequent week in Wisconsin. Then Trump’s regulating mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, had a opposite take when he talked to Fox News today. Let’s hear that.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

MIKE PENCE: we talked to Donald Trump this morning about my support for Paul Ryan and a longtime friendship. He strongly speedy me to validate Paul Ryan in subsequent Tuesday’s primary, and I’m gratified to do it.

MCEVERS: So Domenico, we meant what do we make of Trump and Pence giving these opposite messages on this emanate here?

MONTANARO: Well, it’s positively like they’re regulating dual unequivocally opposite campaigns, during least…

MCEVERS: Yeah.

MONTANARO: …Two unequivocally opposite kinds of messages. You’ve seen Mike Pence do this before. He played a tiny bit of cleanup after a Khan family initial criticized Trump. And Trump was criticized for his response to a Khans. Pence only said, we know, this family gets to contend what they wish though afterwards attempted to pierce on to how Trump wants to quarrel opposite ISIS.

You know, unequivocally Pence was a short-term togetherness pick. He wasn’t unequivocally someone Trump was tighten to. And we should note that dual of people who were on Donald Trump’s shortlist to be clamp boss were Chris Christie and Newt Gingrich, and both have also criticized Trump’s response to a lot of these things.

Gingrich in The Washington Post currently described a competition as between dual people who are unacceptable. He pronounced that Trump is assisting Hillary Clinton win by proof he’s some-more unsuitable than she is.

MCEVERS: Talking about Hillary Clinton, we meant she had some bad news this week also. we seems like maybe a lot of that was overshadowed by Trump. But speak us by some of that.

MONTANARO: Oh, certainly. we mean, we know, Hillary Clinton on Sunday had pronounced that a FBI director, James Comey, had pronounced that she had been guileless when it comes to her private email server. That wasn’t true. There was tiny GDP expansion – expansion domestic product. And afterwards there was this debate with this sell of income that a United States done with Iran with a recover of hostages. You know, this is something that a Trump debate has been articulate about all week, perplexing to change a narrative, though it’s all been overshadowed.

MCEVERS: That’s NPR domestic editor Domenico Montanaro. Thank we unequivocally much.

MONTANARO: Thank you.
